Moving

Ok, I'm jumping ship. In exploring this blogging thing I found I really like Tumblr...so come find me here: http://a-bit-of-anything.tumblr.com/

Influences

I have a lot of them that have helped shape the way I want to write this blog.

Penelope Trunk

Seriously. I was incredibly bored with work and wanting to make a change (and deeply conflicted about making said change, but that’s another blog). I Googled and Googled and Googled (and love that Google has become a verb) “How to leave your job”, “How to give notice”, “How much notice to give”, “How to survive your notice period”, and every other variation I could think of all day at work.

Somehow I landed on her blog and was immediately sucked in. I read all the posts. I devoured them.

Something about the way she wrote unabashedly about her life mixing in career advice, parenting advice, sex advice, don’t do like I did advice struck a chord with me that I loved.

I started toying with the idea of writing my own blog. What would I write about? What do I know? What am I good at? What could I actually write about and post? Well, Penelope helped with a very handy “The easiest instructions for how to start a blog”.  What more could I ask for?

I still didn’t get started. Well, kinda...I started Tales from Tails about the dog rescue work I do. I still want to do that, but it was hardly a blog for some of the ides that run through my head. Yes, i love dogs, and yes, I love the rescue work I am fortunate enough to be a part of, but do I want to write about that all the time? No. So back to the drawing board.

I forgot about wanting to start my own blog for a while. Just let that idea sit in the back of my brain for a while and I went to reading more blogs.

I explored the Internet, clicked on links, Googled thinks and followed links out from there, clicked on commenter's links if I liked what they said.

Effing Dykes

Then I ended up at Effing Dykes. I love the way Krista Burton writes. I loved all the pictures and short blurbs of text. She is incredibly funny and made me laugh out loud.

I threw myself into that blog and started reading from the top all the way back. (In case you hadn’t noticed I’m a voracious reader and when I find something I like I can’t get enough.)

I got back to thinking about my own blog (the one still in my head). I wanted to write something that was entertaining to read (pictures!) and let me explore whatever I was interested in (a bit of everything).

So here we are. It might be just for me. Just for the therapy of writing whatever I want. It might be for you. In fact I hope it is. (In my secretest of secret thoughts I would love to have followers and commenters to interact with.)

But ultimately this blog is about A Little Bit of Everything.

Contemplating Why I Eat

Lately my job has sucked. I gave my notice two month ago today and have about a 3 weeks left to serve out. Essentially during the day I read books, blogs, and MFP (MyFitnessPal) online all day long, 9 hours a day, 5 days a week. My day is only broken up by when I get to eat.

I have coffee every morning when I wake up. I eat breakfast around 9:30 (whole grain oatmeal) after I get to work at 9. I eat Snack 1 at 11 (like yougurt), Snack 2 and 1 (like a small salad), Snack 3 at 3(like steamed veggies), and usually a piece of fruit about 5 (an apple or a cup of grapes). I may or may not be hungry all of these times, but I am SO incredibly bored and unmotivated that I just eat to take a legitimate break for a few minutes.

I have really been trying to work on eating when I'm hungry, stopping when I'm satisfied, but I am really struggling with it at work. I'm not going over my calories or anything, but I'm not eating the way I want to eat. It sounds so simple hungry=eat, satisfied=stop but I am struggling with eating from boredom or just to get a break from boredom.

I do pretty well at dinner just eating until I'm satisifed, not finishing every bite on my plate. On the weekends I don't eat as many "good for me" foods, but I do well at eating to satisfaction which is ok by me. I don't want a diet (lifestyle change, whatever) that means I can't eat what I want on occassion. I just want to eat what I want until I'm satifisfied, not till I feel sick, and I want to pick foods that make me feel good most of the time (ie whole grains, veggies, fruits) and avoid foods that make me feel heavy and sick (fried, processed, boxed).

I think its OK to eat french fries, hamburgers, pasta, bread, frozen yogurt sometimes if thats what I really want and I eat till I'm satisified with it so long as I also eat (and eat more often) fresh veggies and fruit, whole grains, yogurt till I'm satisifed. i want a varied diet that has room for everything.

I don't want to eat just cause it's time to eat or just cause I'm bored, or just cause its on my plate.

Any tips on avoiding boredom eating? (Other than reading books, blogs, and MFP all day...I'm already doing that like 40 hrs/wk or more! :))
